Aromatherapy has much to offer men as well as women. Many men are taking more care of their personal appearance these days and choosing natural products to enhance their health. There are many essential oils and carrier oils that offer health and wellbeing benefits for men of all ages. Applying natural oils, such as jojoba or grapeseed oil immediately after a warm shower (when they are absorbed readily) helps to ensure the body stays in optimal condition as this is a simple and effective way of making sure the skin remains moisturized. Specific aromatic massage oils which have been formulated with a therapeutic emphasis can also help deal with a range of common complaints, such as muscular strain and sports aches and pains. For example, our Aqua Oleum Body/ Massage Oil range which includes ‘Vitality’, a blend which supports and eases the muscles before and after vigorous activity is a favorite with men, as is our best selling ‘Aches & Pains’ blend.

Men’s facial oils and beard oils have also seen a big boost in popularity within the last decade. Simply applying easily absorbed oils such as light coconut oil or organic argan oil to the face in the morning and in evening before retiring will help condition the complexion without leaving any scent or residue behind. The same oils can also be applied to a beard on a daily basis, as this will instantly give it greater vigor and shine. You don’t need to add any essential oils if you prefer a scent free option … but by adding a few drops of rosemary essential oil to the base oil, this will also give it a lovely light-herby fragrance and further act as a conditioner. What applies to the beard also naturally applies to the hair too! Conditioning the hair just once a week using jojoba oil, left on overnight if possible, will improve the quality (and quantity) of hair too.

It is well known that certain scents have a greater masculine association than others: for example, all the woody essential oils such as cedarwood, sandalwood, cypress, juniper and pine are frequently used in men’s fragrances. Oriental oils including frankincense, amyris, myrrh and balsam of peru are also popular ingredients in blended men’s products alongside earthy or mossy undertones such as cade or vertiver oil. Oils which are commonly employed in ‘eau de cologne’ type products are also classified as more masculine in character: oils such as petitgrain or bergamot, as well as some classic herbal fragrances including rosemary, fennel, bay and laurel leaf. In making blended products it always makes a product more intriguing and interesting to add an oil that is slightly ‘off beat’ in character to the rest of the ingredients. This is where the addition of certain spice oils, such as cardomon, black pepper or clove comes in, used in minute quantities, because it is easy for spicy scents to dominate a blend. Even the careful use of floral oils usually associated with more feminine type perfumes, such as jasmine or rose, can add finesse to a masculine blend when used with imagination. And of course, the line between male and female style perfumes doesn’t need to be so defined overall: for example, my daughter prefers more masculine type fragrances to more classic feminine perfumes. It is fun to experiment with making a personalized body oil or beard oil blend as a Fathers Day gift or to surprise your partner.
